Life cover is described in many different ways i.e. life insurance, life assurance, Term assurance and all basically mean the same type of life Insurance cover.

Life Insurance cover

Life insurance is cover on the life of the individual and can also be taken out on a joint basis. The 'life term' policy is an insurance on the individual's life but with a set term of years 10, 15 or 20 etc. This would be determined at the time the Life Insurance cover is arranged and the premiums would depend on the age of the individual and the length required for the policy to run. The premiums would normally increase with the age of the individual, and other factors that may influence the amount of the premium might be health; if, for instance, the person smokes, their occupation, this would be taken in to account by the insurer when calculating premiums.

Increasing Term Insurance

This works much like the basic term insurance, except that the level of cover increases - and usually the premiums too - for example by five per cent a year or in line with inflation. It is worth considering this type of policy, especially if you are insuring for a long term, because increasing prices eat away at the value of a fixed level of life cover.

Mortgage life Insurance cover

A repayment mortgage pays off the outstanding capital as well as servicing the interest on the loan. The effect being that as time goes by the mortgage amount outstanding decreases and at the end of the term the mortgage is fully paid.

Normally the type of life assurance required to cover this mortgage is decreasing term assurance rather than level term assurance or more commonly referred to as mortgage protection assurance.

The policy is set up to provide a level of life cover to meet the original loan, which, as time goes by decreases as the mortgage is paid off. On the redemption date of the loan the policy comes to an end, normally without value.

The policy normally has the option to include critical illness insurance.

Critical Illness Insurance

life insurance cover protects against the financial consequenses of premature death, but what if you survive a critical illness such as a heart attack, cancer, stroke or other life threatening disease? Often the patient is unable to work and could be partially or totally disabled.

To cover the financial consequences of this risk a critical illness policy could be used. In most cases this pays out a lump sum to provide funds for repayment of the mortgage. Critical illness cover can also be taken as level term cover too. A claim cannot be normally made until the patient has survived a certain period of time from any one of the specified illnesses covered in the policy.

The policy usually covers Permanent total disability too.

Life insurance companies have different illnesses they cover under Critical illness policies,It is very important to get advice when considering this type of Insurance cover.
